Do I need to send a Save the date?

Do I need to send a Save the date?

A save the date does exactly what it says on the tin. It tells your guest what date to hold in their diary. These are super useful as it allows your guests to plan their life in advance especially if you are planning your wedding a year or two in advance. You won’t have an aunt in Ibiza or a groomsman at the races as the save the date will have done its job and the event of the year (your wedding) will already be in the diary.

Does the date we are getting married impact whether we need a save the date?

If you’re getting married during a bank holiday or peak wedding season (especially the summer), a save the date is extremely helpful for getting your guests organised! People will need to book annual leave or arrange holidays around your wedding and so it makes their life easier if they have as much warning as possible.

Weekday and Sunday weddings are becoming more and more popular and if you’ve opted for this I’d highly recommend getting it in the diary as soon as you can so as many of your favourite people can be there to celebrate with you.

The real question iscan I change my theme after I send my save the date?”

And the answer is of course you can!

It’s totally normal to change your opinion after sending the dates. Let’s face it, you’ll be down a Pinterest rabbit hole and have 101 new ideas. The more you plan your wedding the more you are exposed to different ideas and options. It’s my job as your stationery designer to gather this inspiration and ideas and turn it into your beautiful stationery.

The save the date is a formality letting your guests know to hold their date. I often advise my couples to go for neutrals or designs. This gives you a chance to completely change your mind on colours and themes after you’ve sent them. Going for a neutral colour can still be incredibly beautiful. If the wedding colour is set in stone, we can use that in your design so the piece compliments your main invitations but keeping the design softer allows the main invitation to be the real show stopper. Whilst you may notice that your save the dates were blue and your invites are pink our guests probably won’t! If it changes, it changes and that is absolutely fine. The invite to your wedding will be the item that your loved ones keep.

It’s your wedding so you can do whatever you want to do! In between sending your save the dates and sending your invite a lot can change. Your favourite colour might change, or your suit might be a different colour and so once these details are confirmed you want your wedding invites in your wedding colour.  Having your invites in your wedding colours also gives your guests the heads up for what colours to avoid wearing!

When do I need to send save the dates?

The sooner the better! Anywhere from 9 months to 18months I would recommend. You don’t want to send them too far in advanced that they get lost but once you’ve secured your date, it’s time to start thinking about them and getting them designed.

When I was creating the stationery for Clare and Oliver, they were not sure on colours but knew they needed to send save the dates as they were having a sunday wedding so their guests may need to book time off work. They initially really liked copper, and so they had a luxurious copper foil save the date. Sending save the dates over a year before the wedding meant their ideas changed and it became an elegant emerald green affair. As their save the dates didn’t give much away about colour scheme this change worked really well and only the couple and I knew the wedding had had a completely new style.

What if I don’t want to have save the dates?

My motto is your wedding your way. If you don’t want save the dates, you don’t have to have them. But I would advise bringing forward the date you want to send your invitations so your guests have plenty of time to get organised and ready to celebrate with you.
